Once you work in certain instances you need to understand that your work clothes will not be any kind of fashion statement, they are designed to serve a purpose and that reason is not to entice the opposite gender. This is exactly why younger workers sometimes have to be forced to put on the things they do not like, it is the only way to guarantee ear safety and bodily safety.
It isn't that long ago that protection in the workplace was pretty much ignored. There were few laws about how laborers were taken care of and if anyone lost a finger, or even worse, there was always someone to substitute them. As laws guaranteeing the protection for workers have increased so the wearing of protective ear muffs in loud environments and bright orange or yellowish jackets have become the norm anywhere where forklifts and lorries move around among workers.
It doesn't take long for a noisy repetitive noise to do long term hearing damage, the real concern is that the hearing damage may not become obvious for months or maybe years. Of course once someone decides not to wear their high visibility best and gets run over by a forklift it is much more serious.
The saddest thing I have observed in factories is that it is not until someone who operates there gets wounded that many people start to take the safety procedures seriously. Waiting till it is too late is not a good way to protect your hearing, or your body.
